How can we improve communication with people who have Usher syndrome?

Follow your usual rules for making yourselves easily lipreadable. Optimum lighting conditions are of paramount importance for people with any type of Usher Syndrome.

Usher people may be:

Unable to see in the dark or in dim light.

Possible solution:- Put on lights or move to a lighter area. Ask the individual if the lighting is correct for them. Adjust the seating arrangements if necessary.

Unable to see to the side

Possible solution:- Put on the lights or move to a lighter area. Ask the individual if the lighting is correct for them. Adjust the seating arrangements if necessary.

Sensitive to glare.

Possible solution:- Make sure that the direction of light is behind or to the side of the Usher person. Remove shiny objects and those which cause glare.

Unable to see normal print.

Possible solution:- Use larger and/or bolder print, possibly producer on different coloured paper, which may improve legibility.

Unable to concentrate on lipreading for long periods of time.

Possible solution:- Lipreading is a strain anyway, so for people with Usher, it is important to limit lipreading sessions. The sessions should be paced well and broken with short pauses.

How can we improve the mobility of Usher people?

Usher people may be:

Unable to find their way around in the dark or in dim light.

Possible solution:- Don't be nervous to offer your arm to guide them.

In danger of bumping into low furniture, door frames and open windows etc. or of falling down steps, particularly in poorly-lit areas.

Possible solution:- Inform them of any likely obstacles and steps.

A general guide is, if in doubt, always ask the Usher person what they would find helpful. The speed and variability of the syndrome within individuals is enormous. Learn from each person.
