Causes of Blindness
Age Related Macular Degeneration:
- Progressive loss of central vision
- Leading cause of blindness in adults over 55
Retinitis Pigmentosa:
- Progressive loss of vision
- Usually begins with night blindness
Usher Syndrome:
- Begins with deafness at birth or early childhood
- Followed by progressive vision loss (due to RP) in teen years
Stargardt Disease:
- Most common form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration
- Characterized by a reduction of central vision with a preservation of
peripheral (side) vision
Bardet-Biedl Syndrome:
- Complex disorder that affects many parts of the body including the
retina
- Syndrome includes a retinal degeneration similar to retinitis
pigmentosa
Best Disease:
- Also known as vitelliform macular dystrophy
- An inherited form of macular degeneration
- Characterized by a loss of central vision
Choroideremia:
- Rare inherited disorder
- Causes progressive loss of vision due to degeneration of the choroid and
retina
Juvenile Retinoschisis:
- An inherited disease diagnosed in childhood
- Causes progressive loss of central and peripheral (side) vision
Leber
Congenital Amaurosis:
- An inherited retinal degenerative disease
- Characterized by sever loss of vision at birth
- A variety of other eye-related abnormalities including roving eye movements,
deep-set eyes, and sensitivity to bright light also occur with this disease
Central nervous system abnormalities may accompany this disease
